Johnny Moss (1907.05.14 – 1995.12.16) was one of the greatest poker players of all times. He was born in Odessa, Texas and allegedly he leart how to cheat before aquiring any stragety. At the beginning he was working as a supervisor in a gabling room to ensure the fairness of the game and catch cheaters. That time he learned himself how to cheat and useful tips as well. This knowledge proved really useful during his poker carreer later on.
He was a classic, old fashioned gambler travelling from town to town, driving all the day and playing high-stakes poker at nights. Gambling was prohibited in the US and players had to be on the road to avoid the authoritioes, cops and rangers.
The most important milestone of his carreer was that well-known heads-up against Nick „The Greek” Dandolos. During five months they played all the possible versions of poker and Moss finished with loss of $2 millions. Then the classic „Mr. Moss, I have to let you go” had been told.
Johnny Moss was the first WSOP winner in 1970-ben. The torunament structure was quite different that time. There was only 7 participants and they played for no prize. The winner was selected by the votes of the players. One year later in “normal” game Moss won again winning 9 WSOP tournaments alltogether and finished in the money 25 times.
